The Problem
Located in heart of Tyseley, Birmingham, Greet Primary School has a history of Academic excellence and a passion for the community in which it serves. Fundamental to the education of our next generations, the running of the school was severely impacted by recent flooding. The need to develop a robust Flood protection system was seen as fundamental, however the design had to consider some unique situations to cater for the operation of the school and the safety of its pupils.
With numerous classrooms and several different types of access points into the buildings the proposal had to consider the principles of flood protection along side a simple system for deployment, as well as always maintaining the functionality of emergency access and escape to the majority of doors, an alternative had to be found.
Traditional flood protection for emergency escape has tended to use traditional steel flood doors however in this project the guidance was to maintain the fields of vision, so an alternative had to be developed.
To solve this M3 Flooodtec developed a swing hinge Defender barrier system within a frame that could be face fixed to the existing building, such that it can be secured in the open position during the day but quickly closed and locked when the school is not in use.
Deployment time is approximately 10 seconds, and using our KitemarkTM Certified Defender Barrier, the buildings are assured that the best standard of flood protection can be rapidly deployed if a flood event is forecast. Along with swing barriers, new flood walls, flood gates and anti flood airbricks were installed to complete the project.
