The Problem
The Newthorpe area of Nottinghamshire has a history of flooding and after suffering during flood events of 2007 and 2013, demanded that something was done to protect the locality and properties in the area.
Highlighted in the 2008 Pitt report, flooding had been identified from 3 major sources - surface water runoff, drainage pipe surcharge and highway surcharge run off.
Severn Trent devised a project to provide PFR to the commercial units in Valley Drive and M3 Floodtec secured the works via the Alliance framework.
Flood waters approaching the commercial properties in Valley Drive from the front and rear were reliant on 1960’s timber facades to stop ingress into the buildings, any solution had to consider low threshold access into the units which has always been an issue with passive flood protection.
Having spent 2 years in R&D, M3 Floodtec launched the BSI KitemarkTM Certified, flood tested, Low-threshold door into the commercial market and this was incorporated into the design of the new shop front facades with low ground flood windows and panel systems.
The advantage of the flood defender Low Threshold door retains wheel chair access whilst ensuring total flood protection as soon as the door is closed.
